Panel 1
A modest river-town training yard at dusk. Teren waits in the cleared square; two defeated students sit aside. Three silver feathers hang at the gate.
Caption: Khemara Reach. Dusk.
Teren: A ladder, please.
Panel 2
The feathers hang below the old board reading VARA. Neri, with her right arm injured and her lip swollen, looks toward it.
Neri: He wants our teacher’s name off the gate.
Panel 3
Mali arrives. Her sabre stays sheathed at her left hip as she catches it beside the gatepost.
Mali: He chose hands?
Sound effect: TOK.
Panel 4
Mali glances toward the challenger, amused and appraising.
Neri: He said he’d hate to damage our swords.
Mali: Considerate.
